Australia’s biggest prostate cancer registry just got bigger

Western Australia (WA) has officially joined the Movember-funded Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry – Australia and New Zealand (PCOR-ANZ). This marks a major milestone: the registry is now operational in every state and territory of Australia, as well as across New Zealand.

PCOR-ANZ currently holds data on 75% of all prostate cancer diagnoses across the region. That’s data on 165,000 people, collected by 411 clinicians across 258 hospitals and clinics. With the inclusion of WA, we expect those figures to rise.

What impact will this have?

The addition of WA improves the geographic representation of the registry, ensuring that data reflects the diverse population and healthcare settings across the country. As more WA clinicians and healthcare sites are set up within the registry, data collection will grow over time—enabling benchmarking of outcomes, tailored care, and continuous quality improvement.

For men diagnosed with prostate cancer in WA, this means they now have the opportunity to contribute to strengthening the healthcare system for future patients. By consenting to be part of the registry, their anonymised data helps paint a clearer picture of real-world outcomes and supports advances in care.

Expanding PCOR-ANZ into WA provides clinicians, health services, researchers and policy makers with the opportunity for a more complete national dataset, enabling better understanding of patient treatments and outcomes and where changes may be needed to ensure that every patient has the same opportunity to access the best standards of care.

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is the first WA-based site to join.

“As our data is collected before diagnosis it allows a population baseline and insight into how each patient is affected by their treatment,” said Dr. Melvyn Kuan, Urologist and Chair of the PCOR-WA Steering Committee.

“This registry is for anyone who wishes to see the real-world impact of treatments on a population of men which can assist in treatment choices. Importantly, this data can also help clinicians and health systems identify areas for improvement.”

Movember, which funds PCOR-ANZ, sees the inclusion of WA as a crucial step in its mission to improve outcomes for all people with prostate cancer.

“Movember is committed to reducing prostate cancer mortality and improving quality of life. With WA now part of PCOR-ANZ, we’re bringing together clinicians, researchers, and patients to create a more robust and representative system,” said Sarah Weller, Director of Prostate Cancer at Movember.

“Together, we’re building a better future for people with prostate cancer—not just in WA, but across Australia and New Zealand.”

About PCOR-ANZ – What is a cancer registry?

PCOR-ANZ is a clinical quality registry that tracks and analyses the treatment, experiences and outcomes of people diagnosed with prostate cancer. The aim is to understand how prostate cancer care is delivered, identify what’s working, and highlight areas for improvement.

In simple terms, a cancer registry collects data about people diagnosed with cancer—things like treatment types, side effects, follow-up care and patient outcomes. By analysing this data over time, health professionals and researchers can spot trends, evaluate the effectiveness of treatments, and make evidence-based recommendations for improving patient care.

PCOR-ANZ is one of the most comprehensive registries of its kind, helping to ensure men with prostate cancer receive the best possible care no matter where they live across Australia and New Zealand.
