Perception Gap

Perception Gap

A compelling research program into one of the most powerful (and least understood) barriers to men's health: the gap between what men personally believe and what they think other men expect of them. Studies consistently show that men overestimate how much toughness and emotional restraint are demanded of them, and underestimate how much openness and help-seeking are accepted.

Who it’s for

RESEARCHERS & ACADEMICS

To access evidence on how masculine norms and social expectations shape men's health behaviours, and where the most significant misconceptions occur.

PRACTITIONERS & PROGRAM DESIGNERS

To develop messaging and interventions that correct harmful misconceptions rather than reinforcing them.

MEN

To clear up misperceptions of restrictive gender norms and encourage healthy, authentic living.

POLICYMAKERS & FUNDERS

To understand how social norms influence men's health at a population level, and what targeted investment can achieve.
