Where the money goes - NZ programs

Movember
3 minutes read time

Since 2003, with funds raised by our supporters, Movember has launched more than 1,250 men’s health projects globally. Our work makes it possible for researchers to create ground-breaking, country and culture specific projects so men worldwide can live healthier and longer lives.

PROGRAMS WE FUND

THE DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN'S RIDE (DGR) SOCIAL CONNECTIONS CHALLENGE

On two-wheels is how NZ men can find freedom, wellbeing and connection. Because The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, with help from Movember, have funded the The Motorcycle Collective; a social enterprise for motorcyclists of all ages. The project provides a space for riders to come together for purpose, belonging and a common love of the wind in their hair. Should you see their Motorcycle Collective’s mobile workshop trailer in the Wellington region, don’t be afraid to park up and say hi.

HEADFIRST

NZ rugby players are some of the toughest anywhere. But now, HeadFirst adds stronger mental fitness to their game. Already, the program can lay claim to showing players how to reach out and giving them the confidence to open up to family and mates. HeadFirst was developed by New Zealand Rugby and funded by Movember. It supports some of NZ’s most at-risk groups, youth, men and those from Māori and Pasifika backgrounds.

VETERANS AND FIRST RESPONDERS MENTAL HEALTH GRANT PROGRAM

When those on the front-line need support, Movember won’t be far off. We’ve launched a global funding opportunity across seven countries, including NZ, with the goal of evaluating the effectiveness of mental health and suicide prevention programs aimed at veterans and first responders. Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s (FENZ) Whanaungatanga Program is one of 15 global projects being funded over the next two years, which seeks to improve the mental well-being of our first responders via organisational changes that promote connection, trust, and a strong sense of value and belonging.

ORANGA TŪ

When Tāne and their whānau become affected by prostate cancer, staying connected to their people, places and cultural practices matters. It’s why this project takes guidance from the kaupapa Māori approach and Māori leadership, values and spirituality. So all factors are taken into account when understanding barriers impacting Tāne and their ability to stay healthy as well as when providing delivery of care.

This kaupapa Māori research project is funded by Movember and conducted with the Auckland University of Technology and the University of Otago. With The Māori prostate cancer lived experience captured in the Oranga Tū documentary available on Māori TV's On Demand service. Click here for more.

PROSTATE CANCER OUTCOMES - REGISTRY AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

PCOR-ANZ is a large-scale prostate cancer registry that collects information on the care provided and the outcomes for men diagnosed with prostate cancer in Australia and New Zealand. The data helps doctors, researchers and diagnosed men improve the wellbeing of those living with prostate cancer.

NUTS & BOLTS

A man diagnosed with testicular cancer should know he’s never alone and has support. That’s the vision for Nuts & Bolts; a website connecting diagnosed men with a supportive community and accessible information to help them back towards living full and healthy lives.

GAP 5 TIGER TRIAL

Right now, testicular cancer therapy for men who’ve relapsed varies around the world. The TIGER trial aims to determine which is more effective to reduce unnecessary side effects and ultimately, save lives. The international project has been guided, shaped and partly funded by Movember.

LIKE A MAN

How society looks at suicide matters. Especially since some men take their own life to avoid being judged as ‘weak’. That’s why Movember has funded ‘Like a Man’, a two-part documentary. It asks important questions around problems men face with mental health, looks at changing attitudes towards masculine norms in an effort to shift views and save lives.

The Movember community has had a huge impact on men's health and we’re hell-bent on making it bigger. Your ongoing support helps us change and save lives.  Sign up or donate today.
