FAQ

Movember, the month formerly known as 'November', is a moustache-growing charity event that raises funds and awareness for men’s health. Movember participants, known as Mo Bros and Mo Sisters, sign up on movember.com and then choose to Grow a moustache, Move by walking or running 60 km throughout the month, Host a Mo-ment by gathering friends or create their own challenge with Mo Your Own Way.

To change the face of men's health, you can either get involved, donate, or partner up with Movember. If you choose to get involved, you can Grow a moustache, Move by running or walking 60 km throughout the month, Host a Mo-ment by gathering friends or create your own challenge with Mo Your Own Way. If you'd like to partner with us get in touch at businessmos@movember.com to speak with our team. Or, if you'd like to donate, get behind a friend by donating to their Mo Space, or make a donation directly to Movember. To help men live happier, healthier, longer lives year-round you can also set up a recurring donation.

At Movember, we believe diversity, collaboration and inclusion drives not only innovation, but greater, more significant impact.

Our global advisory committees and men’s health partners provide insight and guidance on how and where Movember makes programmatic investments. This diverse group of experts are from a range of geographic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds which informs their perspectives, and Movember’s investments across our cause areas: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

We are also working to decrease unconscious bias in our hiring process through clearly defined, objective criteria that’s reviewed before positions are posted so that we attract diverse and wide-ranging talent.

Recognising that diversity is not the same as inclusion, we continue to work on building a supportive organisational culture and encourage an open dialogue among staff to converse and share solutions. Movember is committed to improving diversity and inclusion in our team and establishing a sense of belonging for everyone. We understand there is more work to be done.

While Growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sisters (women who love Mo’s and want to support men's health) do a lot of important work for Movember. Mo Sisters can raise funds and awareness by signing up and:

  • Moving 60 km over the month for the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour
  • Hosting a Mo-ment by gathering friends and family
  • Create your own challenge with Mo Your Own Way
  • Making a donation to a Mo Bro or fellow Mo Sister
  • Encouraging men to be proactive about their health
  • Supporting and showing love for the moustache

Yes. On Movember 1st all participants should start completely clean shaven. Movember is for one month only and head starts are not allowed and go against the spirit of Movember. Remember – each Mo is a conversation starter for men’s health. As such, we encourage all Mo Legends to grow as genuine a Mo as possible. Strictly speaking, a traditional Mo is one that:

Ideally doesn’t join upwards to meet your sideburns (that’s technically a beard). Preferably doesn’t join downwards across your chin (that would be a goatee).

If you’re a Mo Bro with a passion for another type of facial hair, we encourage you to jump on the Mo Train during Movember in the name of men’s health.

No Mo is created equal, so some level of variation is expected. A small complimentary growth under the bottom lip (aka a tickler) is definitely fair game.

A great way to kick off your fundraising is to encourage your friends, family and colleagues to donate to you to shave it off on Movember 1st. Then regrow your moustache throughout the month. Maybe it’s time to try a new moustache style? Check out our Mo Style Guide.

Absolutely. Once you sign up and log into your Mo Space, you'll have a chance to edit your target. You can also edit the type of exercises you record.

If you've got a fitness device or app, you can connect it to your Movember account to automatically add physical activities to your fundraising page – inspiring more donations from your friends and family.

The fitness devices and apps that can be connected are:

  • Garmin
  • Fitbit
  • Strava

Go to the My Account section of your Mo Space to edit your fitness tracker settings.

Previously Movember’s annual campaign only provided binary gender options upon registering - male and female. We recognise the need to change this selection option to reflect everyone and be more inclusive. Movember should welcome everyone – regardless of gender identification – who wants to join us in the fight to improve men’s health. As part of the 2020 Movember Campaign, we’re including a third gender option, non-binary to acknowledge those who want to improve men’s health but had previously felt excluded or not appropriately recognised.

Funds raised during Movember go towards supporting innovative world-class men’s health projects in our key focus areas – mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. These projects are funded either directly by Movember or through our men’s health partners. You can find out more about our impact here.

We’re proud that our global admin and fundraising ratio is 22.8% of funds raised. We operate within international best practice, which is in the range of 15%-25%. Please visit the financials page for more information about Movember's monetary outcomes.

If you complete a Bank Deposit or Electronic Funds Transfer please include the name or registration number of the Mo Bro/Mo Sister/Team as a payment reference (when applicable), this will ensure the donation is registered to their fundraising total.  Please get in touch in your require our bank details.
