Men's health Prostate cancer Mental health and suicide prevention Testicular cancer
I'll start by making a specific request: My planned ride is approximately 1500km... Please contribute 1c/km or $15 (or whatever you like!)
Globally, the rate of suicide is alarmingly high, particularly in men. Too many men are ‘toughing it out’, keeping their feelings to themselves and struggling in silence. The Movember Foundation is aiming to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25% by 2030, and I want to help them get there. Help me stop men dying too young.
Mental health issues feature largely in this picture across all ages and stigma still exist causing men reluctant to seek assistance. I want to support this important target of Movember.
Also, male specific health issues require funding and research, so let’s support this!
I’m planning to ride the length of Te Ika a Maui, the North Island of Aotearoa over 24 days. I'll be self sufficient, carrying a tent. No cooker or fuel due to space constraints. Will share on FB, IG

My motivation for raising funds for Movember is that I have been affected by some of the causes they support.
Our family still feels the effect of a young suicide several years ago and I have lost a few work colleagues to suicide during my career. All men.
I also have had friends and work colleagues have to deal with prostate cancer.
I have also experienced mental
Health issues. I’ve had my ups and downs throughout my life as we all do, and in retrospect have experienced Bipolar Disorder for many years but in my 50’s, possibly triggered by events, the extremes got bigger. I was diagnosed about 7 years ago at age 57 and was treated with a variety of meds. None ever really worked and the last, Lithium (aside form having negative side effects on kidneys, etc) just had me in a permanent fog. I functioned but life was losing its meaning and purpose for me. I chose to stop about 6 months ago, and either support from friends and family I haven’t looked back. I left a dysfunctional workplace, found employment on terms that suited me and am at present on the trip of my lifetime! I hope research can find answers as I’m well aware many do not fare as well as I have.
I haven’t updated my photos here yet but I might post a wild man one towards the end!

Thought I’d do the $15 (1c/km) option to show how easy it is. There will be another opportunity to support the cause for men’s health when I’m doing the TA starting mid Jan.
