Mental health and suicide prevention

Kia Ora team, as I’m sure most of you know I have been donning a beard as long as I’ve been able to grow one. Some of you probably only know me with a beard. It’s a part of my identity and who I am. I feel like I’m missing a piece of me without it. But shaving it is the least I can do to show solidarity, and raise money for a cause I am extremely passionate about.

In New Zealand the second leading cause of premature death in Maori and fourth in non-Maori is suicide. There is any number of reasons for this. Largely the stigma surrounding reaching out and talking to your mates; or seeking help from a professional. But talking to your mates is not always as easy it sounds, and with a struggling mental health system it needs all the help it can get.

Which is where my bare face (soon to be Mo laden) is here to ask for help. Any little bit helps. The people over at Movember are the leading charity changing the face of men’s health. Together we can make a difference for men’s health - not just mental health and suicide prevention, but also prostate and testicular cancer. Early intervention has been shown to reduce the risk of suicide, and by 2030 they aim to reduce male suicide by 25%.

Mental health is not only a male problem, but the rates of suicide are currently a major cause for concern. If you or any of the people you love are struggling don’t be afraid to reach out and get help. There is no shame. We only have one brain, so being mentally healthy is the most important thing you can do to improve your wellbeing.
