My motivation

Fundraising for cause areas including:

Men's health
Mental health and suicide prevention

I’ve been a firefighter for over half my life, and while it’s a career I’m incredibly proud of, I’ve also seen the side of the job that doesn’t always make it home with you.
Over the years, I’ve lost good friends and colleagues to suicide. People who stood beside us, shared the same job, the same laughs and the same experiences. Those losses stay with you, and they’ve made me realize just how important it is that we look after each other.
Firefighters are often good at running towards problems, but not always as good at talking about what’s going on inside.
That’s a big part of why I’m organizing this backyard ultra for firefighters. It’s about getting people together, challenging ourselves physically, but more importantly creating an environment where people can talk, connect and check in with each other.
Every lap is a reminder that none of us should have to carry things alone.
I’m raising money for Movember because I believe we need to keep the conversation around men’s mental health and suicide prevention going — particularly within the firefighting community.
If this event helps even one person feel a little less alone, then every kilometre will be worth it.
We have a great relationship with Movember through previous events and the whanaungatanga programme, I'm hoping that this challenge can be another meaningful step on the pathway for the brotherhood.
