My motivation
Fundraising for cause areas including:
Mental health and suicide prevention

It’s that time of year that I do what I do best…and that’s grow a glorious moustache. I feel incredibly blessed to have this ability as it helps spark conversations about men dying too young.

This is my sixteenth year of being involved with Movember and unfortunately a few years ago I truly learnt what it meant to lose someone to suicide having lost my younger brother, Ian and a great friend, Austin.

Ian passed in April 2017 and Austin the following year in October 2018.
When someone leaves you in this way you are left with only questions, lost opportunities, and only memories; no longer able to build new ones.

I was watching something recently and a question was asked. What happens when we die?
The answer given was…
”Our souls and our spirits go on with the people that we have loved and who have loved us and people we have impacted”

That has stuck with me and is part of the reason that I chose to share the following about Ian and Austin, they still a massive part of my life, now only in my memories and dreams.
Make sure that you tell the people in your lives that you love and care for them, you never know when it will be the last time you have that opportunity.

My brother Ian was just 39. At the time leaving behind his wife and three children ranging from 1 to 11.
Great Memory – We must have been about 9 & 15 when we got a Commodore 64 gaming computer for Christmas, we spent every minute we were allowed playing against each other, trying to beat each other's high scores.

My great mate Austin was just 38. At the time leaving behind his wife and two children ranging from 4 to 8.
Great Memory – Being at one of my lowest points in life, pulling into a carpark for Ian’s funeral. Standing there is Austin, he had flown himself and a mate to Wellington to support Vanessa and I. He walked over, gave me a hug and held me as I burst into tears.

In the twelve months to the end of June 2025 we have lost another 630 people to suicide in NZ, this is an increase of 2%, down on the 9% from last year.
Of the 630 suicides, over 474 were men. The continued work that has been done on removing the stigma about asking for help is great, but we have more to do to ensure anyone that is at risk is able to get the professional help they need.

So, dig deep and support a great cause. I have a goal of raising $1,500, which if I reach, I will donate $500.
