Mental health and suicide prevention

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to stop and read this.

It’s that time of year that I grow a glorious moustache, my wife stays at least one arm’s length away from me and my kids well they are not really impressed that easily, but the reason I do this is to start the conversation about men dying too young.

Unfortunately I know too well what losing someone to suicide is like. I have lost my younger brother Ian and a great friend Austin to suicide.
Both men were young, very much-loved husbands, and fathers to young children.

My brother Ian was 39. He left behind his wife, his daughter who was 11, his son who was 8 and his young daughter who had not yet turned 1.

My great mate Austin was 38. He left behind his wife, his son who was 8 and his daughter who was 4.

I know neither man understood what the long term pain for their children and wives would be.

In the twelve months to the end of June 2021 we have lost another 607 people to suicide in NZ, which thankfully is the second year that we have seen decrease. 2019 was the highest since records were started 12 years ago.

Over the past few years we have moved to a more open discussion on suicide, there is still so much more work to do around how we can prevent suicides and ensure anyone that is at risk is able to get the professional help they need.
