MOtoring for Movember 2021

$0

Target: $20,000
Our Motivation

Three friends, three classic cars, a fixed budget and 2,400kms of driving.

We're setting off on the driving challenge of all challenges. Although the route may seem simple, we've designed a series of challenges along the way to not only test the capabilities of these cars, but also push ourselves.

Our goal? Have fun, take time to reflect, and raise as much money as possible for men's mental and physical health for Movember.

What have we got ourselves into? Here's the rules we've settled on:

The Car:
• Must be older than January 1, 1990
• Must not be Japanese
• Must hold a current WOF/COF and Registration
• Must have insurance
• Must make you happy (at least at the start)

The Rules:
• We all start in the same place and meet at checkpoints along the way for challenges
• Points will be awarded for the various challenges throughout the trip
• Points will be deducted for breakdowns, roadside support and bonnet openings
• No hotels, motels or BnBs. You must sleep in (or around) your car
• All cars must follow the designated route. and compete in all challenges

The Goals:
• Get there in the car we started with, ideally with it still in one piece.
• Raise as much money as we can for Movember through pledges or donations

The Route:
Auckland to Dunedin, via New Plymouth, Picton, Kaikoura, Christchurch, Arthurs Pass, Queenstown and Invercargill.

Day Six Update: We made it. 6 days, 2,400kms and 44 hours behind the wheel.

What an amazing journey seeing some of the best scenery we’ve ever seen.

Day Five Update: 8.5 hours to drive from Franz Josef to Queenstown.

Ryan’s car had a few issues today. The boot won’t easily close and at one point it was misfiring bad enough where he couldn’t drive it.

Elliot’s car remained about the same, with all functions working.

My car did not enjoy today. It overheated about 7 times on the drive (and was almost overheating the entire drive). Picking up a new radiator to see if that helps on the final day.

Day Four Update: This leg of the journey was a real struggle (for some). Christchurch to Franz Josef.

We left at 10:15 and got here at 5:30 so a very long day.

Ryan’s car got a little warm on some of the hills and drank a bit of oil.

Elliot’s car performed as expected with no issues the entire day.

My car was another story... I overheated on the way Arthur’s Pass and needed to add 2l of coolant and continue to add coolant over the course of the day. It also didn’t start once, not sure what that’s about.

Despite all of this, we got here.

First official breakdown goes to me. Hit max temp on the way to Arthur’s Pass.

Worse places to stop I suppose.

Starting the day off with a coolant system flush to prep for Arthur’s Pass. Running like a dream now.

Day Three Update: Made it to Christchurch with very few new issues cropping up today.

Ryan’s car is still getting a bit too hot on hills and when idling

Elliot’s car took a second attempt to start first thing in the morning.

Made it to the Interislander today with no majors. There’s a lot of roadworks on state highway 1 which means a lot of waiting. That did drive up the temperature gauge at times.

Day One Update. We have made it to our first destination. Oakura, just outside of New Plymouth. All three cars made it without any breakdowns, but a few minor issues with each car have popped up.

Ryan can’t use the window wipers in his car, and we were driving for three hours in torrential rain.

Elliot’s back window keeps falling down by itself and has had to be duct taped in place.

My window wipers have a mind of their own and turn on by themselves (which was quite helpful today) and my car really hates wet weather so spluttered and struggled up many of today’s hills.

Made it to Otorohanga. One of these car’s window wipers turn on and off whenever they please and the other car’s wipers make the engine overheat. Good thing we aren’t heading to a place with a wet weather warning.
